Can You Get To Heaven By Being Good?
The question raised here is one amongst the most trickiest sets of questions; as it is doubly compounded making it quite complex and if one is a purist he will have to untie all the knots upon a knot before giving any verdict.
Now after a secret boast, I will only try to be the one.
Firstly, let me would define the good; any thought/words/actions that is beneficial in nature for all or that which has more benefit than harm in general for all.
[002.219] They ask you (O Muhammad [peace be on him]) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: “In them is a great harm, and (some) benefits for men, but the harm of them is greater than their benefit.” And they ask you what they ought to give in charity. Say: “That which is (spare) beyond your needs.”
This verse of the Holy Quran gives us the criterion to know what is good and what is not in a very general and applicable form. The first half of the verse concerns with the weighing of harm and benefit and thereby giving verdict. The second half of the verse has the sweetness unmatched regarding the virtue where the issue is only concern with benefit.
However, when the matter is contentious as to who is on the just and true path then what?
Then there are three possibility 1)both or more (than both) are on false/unjust path. 2)both or more (than both) are on true path. 3) only one is on the truly true path.
Now one thing at least is clear that not all contentions are good versus evil. We being prone to many immoralities we contend for many different reasons and each side defends itself with a proof. At times both or more (than both) have wrong reason(s); at times both or more (than both) have right reason(s); at times only one has the right reason(s) while others are wrong.
After thorough unbiased inspection of any case with knowledge, we are blessed with the wisdom to know what is right and wrong or good and bad.
Problem with people is that they think and talk without concrete knowledge. People most of time are ignorant of their ignorance and base their opinion of truth and false as if they are an expert on the subject, that too just by following the voice that seems on their side or with the majority.
In this age of power parade through research and technology. Ironically, most people have sold their intelligence, submitted themselves like a cow, and only understand the slogan language.
Good/right/truth/justice is independent of any object or us. i.e. it does not depend on our belief or thought. It depends on the meaning of itself.
Now lets move on the topic of heaven. Once again question arises but a different one, as to whether it really exist or is just a figment of imagination.
When we talk of heaven or hell it firmly suggest the existence afterlife. Hence if existence of afterlife is cleanly and handsomely proved than the reward in it too gets proved by default.
Now just see the knots upon a knot that I was talking-of, as to prove the existence of afterlife one has to prove the existence of THE ABSOLUTE CREATOR, which further demands the proof of HIS oneness and HIS resurrection capability.
Once more if the existence of THE SUPREME CREATOR is established than HIS oneness and resurrection capability too gets established for any sane person. As there would have been competition unthought-of if more than, one CREATOR existed. Each CREATOR would have created a world where only HIS follower existed. I doubt in this case of more than one creator that why will THEY create any creature having a free-will, who won’t act as THEIR robot. Moving onto resurrection capability can there be any doubt in it, as the ONE who can create first time without any image then why cannot the second time, which is much simpler and the creation of such a vast synchronized universe all inclusive is much tougher than recreation of anything. Please read on the following verse selected from five different chapters of Holy Quran (chapter number : verse number).
[040:057] The creation of the heavens and the earth is indeed greater than the creation of mankind; yet, most of mankind know not. (Holy Quran).
017:049] And they say: “When we are bones and fragments (destroyed), should we really be resurrected (to be) a new creation?”.
[017:050] Say (O Muhammad [peace be on him]): “Be you stones or iron,”
[017:051] “Or some created thing that is yet greater (or harder) in your imagination (thoughts).” Then, they will say: “Who shall bring us back (to life)?” Say: “He Who created you first!” Then, they will shake their heads at you and say: “When will that be?” Say: “Perhaps it is near!”(Holy Quran).
023:081] Nay, but they say the like of what the men of old said.
[023:082] They said: “When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected indeed?
[023:083] “Verily, this we have been promised we and our fathers before (us)! This is nothing but tales of the ancients!”(Holy Quran).
[037:012]. Nay, you (O Muhammad [sal-Allhu 'alayhiwa sallam]) wondered (at their insolence) while they mock (at you and at the Qur’an).
[075:003] Does man (a disbeliever) think that We shall not assemble his bones?
[075:004] Yes, We are Able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers.
[075:005] Nay! Man (denies Resurrection and Reckoning. Since he) desires to continue committing sins. (Holy Quran).
From the last verse of above mentioned verses we come to know the real reason why all the non believers deny ressurection and reckoning i.e. afterlife is they desire to live the way they want to live and continue commiting sins of varying degree.
Here for the sake of brevity I would only discuss on, why is afterlife? Its answer would automatically surround the “title” and the cause of all that exists (i.e. THE CREATOR).
This world is full of inequalities and injustices, one doesn’t need to be a rocket scientist to know this fact.
Wherever you see o’ my darling, you would see no two people equal. What is this fate of one getting all while the other just watches all. I see many born rich and many born poor. I see many born healthy and many born defective. I see many born male and many born female.
I see man ruling man. I see the tyrants and the subjects of their tyranny. I see the thieves, liars, fraudsters, politicians, senators, murderers, adulterants, pranksters, teasers, rapist, trespassers, encroachers and their counterparts. I see! I hear! I understand! Do you?
I see over every man some other man. I see none having all. Do you know that, inequality is by nature and malpractices are by human?
If there had been utter equality all around then there would have been no variety, struggle, employment, trade, profession, and competition.
If there had been utter equality all around then the world would have been extremely over or under populated or had perfectly constant population.
If there had been utter equality all around then any minor calamity, accident or incident resulting in only one death would demand death to all.
If there had been utter equality all around by nature then not a single moving creature would have been alive in this world.
035:045] And if Allah were to punish men for that which they earned, He would not leave a moving (living) creature on the surface of the earth; but He gives them respite to an appointed term, and when their term comes, then verily, Allah is Ever All-Seer of His slaves. (Holy Quran).
042:027] And if Allah were to enlarge the provision for His slaves, they would surely rebel in the earth (in the most rebellious way), but He sends down by measure
as He wills. Verily, He is, in respect of His slaves, Well-Acquainted, All-Seer (of things that suits them). (Holy Quran).
In the inequality of nature exists the equality, in the malpractice of human exists the inequality.
This world would have been indeed a place of inequality and injustice had it been the final destination. “In truth lies the victory and success” would have meant nothing, as we see in this world that many a time truth and honesty gets some heavy pounding from false and fraud also many a time truth is never revealed out and many/all remain ignorant of it. Many a time false and lie rules over truth and honesty for decades/century hence many believe the false to be the true and the true to be the false and many know this but only few fight for the real truth and exposing the assumed truth(fake).
“Permanent life after death of recompense solves all the inequalities, injustices, mysteries and unsatisfied wishes surrounding the temporary life before death of test (or this world).”
Afterlife of recompense for every deed executed under whatever circumstances gives balance to this tilted world in every meaningful sense.
Now finally moving on to the topic, can anyone get to paradise by being good? No and yes both answers are right for this unique question.
Firstly, on why one can’t get to heaven just by being good.
1) The intention behind being good or doing good deeds really does matter for getting any reward in the life after death.
018:030] Verily, as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, certainly We shall not make the reward of anyone who does his (righteous) deeds in the most perfect manner to be lost. (Holy Quran).
003:145] And no person can ever die except by Allah’s Leave and at an appointed term. And whoever desires a reward in (this) world, We shall give him of it; and whoever desires a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give him thereof. And We shall reward the grateful.(Holy Quran).
026:164] “No reward do I ask of you for it (good deeds); my reward is only from the Lord of all universes. (Holy Quran).
[042:020] Whosoever desires (by his deeds) the reward of the Hereafter, We give him increase in his reward, and whosoever desires the reward of this world (by his deeds), We give him thereof , and he has no portion in the Hereafter. (Holy Quran).
[076:008] And they give food, inspite of their love for it (share it when hungry), with the Miskin (the needy), the orphan and the captive,
[076:009] (Saying): “We feed you seeking Allah’s Countenance only. We wish for no reward, nor thanks from you. (Holy Quran).
002.177] It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and every act of obedience to Allh) that you turn your faces towards the east and (or) the west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets; and gives wealth in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-Masakin (the needy), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; performs As-Salat (the prayers), and gives the Zakat (obligatory charity); and who fulfil their covenant when they make it, and who are patient in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the people of the truth and they are Al-Muttaqun (the pious.). (Holy Quran).
Above verses of Holy Quran gives guidelines for qualification of any act for getting its due reward in heaven. If any good act is done without firm belief than it will get its reward in this world itself and in hereafter it would be of no use. If any good act is done for the sake of getting fame, name, respect, wealth, or any object of desire of this world than that good act won’t qualify for any reward in heaven.
[2) All good acts with belief gets it due reward in this world itself as he gets that peace of heart with which others are devoid-of and at times he negates it with some wrong act as he is no angel hence will commit sins then repent with guilt. All doers of good do it for a very limited period of time and to get its reward for indefinite period with absolute happiness, and with all objects of desire unimagined, is just too much. Hence getting heaven is the mercy of THE MOST MERCIFUL, and not because of good acts with belief. This is what the last Messenger(peace be upon him) of THE MOST MERCIFUL said, read on..
Allah's Messenger [sal-Allhu 'alayhi wa sallam] said, “The deeds of anyone of you will not save you [from the (Hell) Fire].” They said, “Even you (will not be saved by your deeds), O Allah’s Messenger?” He said, “No, even I (will not be saved) unless and until Allah bestows His Mercy on me and protects me with His Grace. Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and worship Allah in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target (Paradise).” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, 8/6463 (O.P.470)]
[099:006] That Day mankind will proceed in scattered groups that they may be shown their deeds. (Holy Quran).
058:006] On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all together (i.e. on the Day of Resurrection) and inform them of what they did. Allah has kept account of it, while they have forgotten it. And Allah is Witness over all things. (Holy Quran).
[099:007] So, whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom shall see it.
[099:008] And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom shall see it. (Holy Quran).
Hence we come to know that our quantity and quality of good acts with belief is not sufficient for us to get to heaven without the mercy of THE MOST MERCIFUL. Nevertheless, it will decide the grade of our paradise from the many different grades of paradises, created by THE MOST MERCIFUL.
We can in the light of verses from Holy Quran and the saying of His last messenger (peace and mercy of ALLAH be upon him), conclude that we cannot get to heaven just by our good deeds without the mercy of THE MOST MERCIFUL. Thereby making the answer “no” correct. However, at the same time our good deeds with belief will be measured against our sins committed and if our good deeds outweighs our sins only then heaven will be rewarded. Thereby making the answer “yes” correct.
011:111] And verily, to each of them your Lord will repay their works in full. Surely, He is All-Acquainted with what they do. (Holy Quran).
[007:008] And the weighing on that day (Day of Resurrection) will be the true (weighing). So, as for those whose Scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise).
[007:009] And as for those whose Scale will be light, they are those who will lose their own selves (by entering Hell)
